Curriculum

In March 2012 the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage was published setting out changes to the UK EYFS following an extensive consultation process. Although this will not come into effect until September 2012 now is the time for practitioners to be gearing up to make the necessary changes to their practice. The four EYFS themes of A Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environment, Learning and Development remain in the final version but the Early Learning Goals has been reduced from 69 to 17. Emphasis has also shifted within the six areas of Learning and Development with Personal, Social & Emotional Development, Communication & language and Physical Development now forming three prime areas, underpinning all children’s development. In the youngest children focus will be on these three prime areas. Once a firm foundation has been secured in these, emphasis will shift equally between these three prime areas and the following four specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive arts and design.

Underpinning all of this are the following three characteristics of effective learning present in all the areas of learning and development:

  • Playing and exploring
  • Active learning
  • Creating and thinking creatively
